The sequel has now been in development for more than 8 years, and a playable early access version of Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord only just arrived on Steam. However, Mount & Blade significantly improved over the years thanks to a diehard modding community and lauded standalone expansions, becoming a cult classic in the process. The game had uniquely intense and complex gameplay, but it wasn't up to par in most other areas and didn't achieve widespread popularity.

Mount & Blade first appeared on the gaming scene in 2008 as a medieval RPG with a number of innovative ideas. As Bethesda revealed last week, Doom Eternal had the series' best day-one sales and quickly became one of Steam's biggest releases in 2020. Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord just launched into early access on Steam, and the game has already surpassed Doom Eternal's concurrent player total.
